People of Bangladesh again proved their capacity to cope with nature.The
Cyclonic storm “Roanu” passed Bangladesh coast on Saturday afternoon, 21 May
2016. At least 23 people were killed
in different coastal districts.
The storm knocked down homes and toppled trees, causing the casualties in Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Bhola, Noakhali, Fani, Patuakhali and Laxmipur districts. People left their homes in the coastal areas for safety ahead of the storm and afterwards amid high tides, wind gusts (100 km/h) and incessant rain. The death toll may rise as many are missing and critically injured.
Could've been worse if not for swift actions
Pre-disaster Planning and preparedness from Government authority worked nicely. To avoid
heavy loss of lives and damage to properties, the disaster management and
relief ministry conducted a massive evacuation campaign and mobilised medical
aids and in 13 most vulnerable coastal districts. More than 5 lakh were moved
to 3,554 cyclone shelters well before the cyclone made landfall. The disaster
management ministry, fire brigade, meteorological department worked together to
face the cyclonic storm “Roanu”.
